Research Paper Topics

July 1st, 2010 by · No Comments · Research Tools

So I’ve been teaching a year now (hence the absence) and one of my student’s biggest complaints is a lack of research paper topic ideas. Try as I might, I have had a terrible time getting them to be creative. I do remember when I was in college, having a tough time being original and impressive. I was always one or the other. For example, I had the research paper topic of “Serials Killers from Wisconsin” and a great idea of linking them to the religious nature of the conservative Lutherans but the paper lacked original research. Then there was my killer abortion research paper (mundane topic) but I wrote it from the view of the dumpster outside the abortion clinic. Unique but not effective in delivering brilliant research.

So how do I lead my students to present unique research paper topics? What sources are out there that provide idea-inspiring material. I found one site that had great research paper topics but its not a site I can recommend to my students. I actually thought that an iPod or iPad app would be a fabulous idea. It could be a hierarchal selection thing that narrows the topic respectively.

Anyone have any ideas on good sites for research paper topics, I would certainly welcome all suggestions.

Community College Encouraged by Educational Institutions

August 10th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Forbes Magazine is running an essay in which the Vice President’s wife, Dr. Jill Biden, is extolling the benefits of a community college education. This is a trend I have witnessed myself in working with students over the past 10 years. The number of older, none-traditional community college students seems to be increasing and the stigma of community college is decreasing. I’m pleased to witness this trend and excited at the possibilities of upping the quality of community college education.

Dr. Bidden’s recognition of the importance of community colleges is in line with the Obama administration’s recent focus on making education more accessable for all. Obama’s American Graduation initiative is further proof of the administration’s commitment to advancing educational opportunities.

The technology revolution has made it possible to teach almost every aspect of every discipline via distance education.  Utilizing this technology, several post-secondary institutions have begun to develop certificate, undergraduate and graduate programs utilizing virtual classrooms and education.  Eastern Oregon University, Emporia State University, Kutztown University, La Salle University, the Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point, and Virginia Tech are among the many institutions integrating distance education as part of their curriculum.

With colleges and universities alike jumping on the “distance education bandwagon” it would seem that the traditional classroom would be fast becoming an antique.  Despite the fact that distance education has many supporters worldwide, there are a number of opponents in the field of education that feel distance education carries with it some inherent problems that could ultimately effect the quality and standard of education for all students: traditional and distance bound alike.

National Skills College

July 6th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Interesting idea…make online education free and ubiquitous with socialist views on providing for community college and more affordable educational outlets via the internet. Free online classes, free e-textbooks – what’s the problem with this? Hmm…what to call it…how about National Skills College.

Well, I can think of a few things…Americans for one. The American work ethic isn’t quite the Protestant work ethic or even the Obama work ethic (the driving force behind the creation of a National Skills College). Part of what makes our educational system work post-secondary is capitalism. The more you pay, the better your education is. Are our public high schools evidence of a working socialist system of education? No, absolutely not. What is the best community college you can think of? Um…probably none because teachers generally don’t like community college duty. It is something akin to hall monitor or recess patrol.

I’ll be interested to watch how this idea develops. Would love it but…Don’t think so, not in America. China maybe…Americans wouldn’t know what to do with the ability to better themselves on their own.

Term Paper Writers Blog

June 5th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

Paper Masters, who I have been working with for a couple of years now, has asked me to officiate a blog for writers of term papers. Mainly, this will be a forum for their writers to keep up to date on new and helpful research methods, requirements and notices for the writers of term papers and research papers. I’m still thinking about it because my schedule is horrendous but overall I think it is a good idea and much needed.

I’ll begin next week and I encourage anyone that has ideas, comments and input to freely share them with me so that I can make this a truly valuable resource.

Questioning Notre Dame? By Whose Authority

May 25th, 2009 by · No Comments · Uncategorized

I read an interesting article questioning whether or not Notre Dame is slacking in religious affiliation and ideology. I think this is really a question that can be aimed at the entire higher education system in America. Each institution needs to be held accountable for the direction they are proposing. The ideals of educational institutions have been replaced by the financial constraints of the very competitive industry of higher education. Notre Dame is just one of the many institutions that has lost its way under the pressure of the dollar.

New MLA Guidelines for Writers of Term Papers

May 11th, 2009 by · No Comments · Citation

The Modern Language Association has published the 7th Edition of MLA guidelines for writers of academic material. The changes are not overwhelming in this edition but some very interesting and easier formats have come about. We can all say “Thank you” for the final word on Underlining. NO MORE Underlining! Italics is the proper format for delineating written works and emphasis.

Much to many educator’s surprise, URL’s are gone now. Justification? Well, if it is a hard to find site, then “author’s are encouraged” to provide the URL but it is not necessary. Just author name, article name and date of publication. Fair enough, we can all do a Google Search!

A big change is the publication medium. This is particularly helpful when writers are writing for another person or a term paper company. When I writer for Paper Masters, the medium inclusion will help their client to learn what type of medium a particular citation is and how to format citation for that medium.

My focus for this blog is on academic research outside of the University Setting. I am interested in what other people do in the field of academic research but are not employed by a University or College.

Welcome and give me your ideas!
